Technology Backwardness of the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic vis-à-vis European Leaders: Some Critical Views

Keywords:
technologic backwardness, competitiveness, innovation

Abstract:
The paper analyzes the technological backwardness of the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic vis-à-vis two of the most developed European countries – Denmark and Finland. A comparison of 21 European countries based on aggregate aspects of competitiveness did not fully reflect the problems of the two Central European countries analyzed. The problem of technological backwardness is clearly visible in desegregation of indicators according to certain individual segments. This includes the segments of (1) technological readiness, (2) business sophistication, and (3) innovation. However, not even indicators characterizing these segments fully explain existing differences and their causes. Therefore, we try to identify the existing differences, disclose possible causes of backwardness and indicate possible directions of changes in economic policy which could improve the existing situation and partially eliminate the extent of backwardness.
